Details of Teak

Teak (Tectona) is basically a genus of hard wood grown mostly in the tropical areas as Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn area. It is mainly native of South and Southeast Asia. They are large deciduous trees growing as high as 150 feet tall. They are known to be grown mostly in India, Indonesia, and Burma etc. The name teak is derived from Malayalam word Thekku.

Teak has the following qualities

Teak has natural oil content, rubber and silica which repel water. The teak's sap has anti bacterial and anti fungal properties. The rubber and silica make it pliable, able to withstand high pressure without cracking. Teak is an extremely heavy wood, with dense fibres, making it relatively easy to cut and graft. Teak is resistant to termite. All these qualities together make Teak the best choice for all your outdoor furniture, not only beauty wise but also reliability wise. Keeping Teak wood outside in harsh climatic conditions does damage the wood!

Teak is generally used in

Teak is used mainly used for making marine furniture. Teak is also used for making pillars, windows and doors. The art of window and door making is mostly found in India and has been practiced for 2000 years! In India many pillars of ancient temples are made of teak. The oil extracted from this tree, especially in Burma, is used mostly for medicinal purposes.

Colour and texture of teak wood

The green choice for the Environment

The various types of Teak are of different colours and textures, dark brown and golden yellow etc. But despite these differences the quality, strength and utility of Teak wood remains the same for all! Teak changes colour with time but never reduces in quality and strength. Teak when fresh cut contains certain amount of surface oil that vanishes over time and develops surface cracks. But that doesn't mean that the quality detoriates. With time the Teak wood becomes silver grey if kept outside or becomes dark brown if kept inside. This is quite natural and as the oil vanishes from its surface it becomes stronger with each passing day. Teak is placed highest in price due to all these unmatched qualities that you won't find in any other wood!

Our teak - why we are the green choice

Our teak furniture

Teak is one of the worlds' most valuable woods. Hard, heavy and strong, it has natural properties, which help it to withstand the elements and is almost immune to decay. Moreover, teak actually hardens with age as the years pass. Teak beams have been found, in good condition, in Far Eastern temples over 1,000 years old. Teak has also has been used extensively in naval construction for centuries.

At Heirloom Furniture, we source only the best quality Grade A teak for our products, made of trees of not less than 80 years of age. We only use teak which has been kiln dried to 8 - 10% moisture levels and we urge you to compare our quality of wood with other manufacturers who often use lower quality Teak with a much higher water content.

We do not hide or fill imperfections. For one simple reason - our wood doesn't have any imperfections. Knots, white and dark wood areas are removed from our teak. All our screws and fittings are solid brass (not brass plated). Table tops are no less than 3cm thick.

Perum Perhutani plantations
Perum Perhutani plantations
All our teak is sourced from Java exclusively from the highly reputable Perum Perhutani plantations, which are managed by the Indonesian government. The plantations date back 150 years to when Java was a Dutch colony and settlers planted the very first teak saplings. Since then many other plantations have grown and flourished on the island of Java. High priority is given to continuous replanting of Indonesian timber resources. Heirloom teak furniture can be enjoyed in the certain knowledge that the estimated 4,000 species of tree, 500 species of mammal and 1,500 species of bird that flourish in the unique forests of Indonesia are safe and secure in their natural habitat.
